Playground leaders
Our Active Schools Committee were also trained to be playground leaders. Their role includes organizing equipment for yard on lunchtime. On Thursdays, along with the yard buddies in 6th class, the playground leaders show the junior classes different playground games and play them during lunch. They also bring equipment to the other yard for children to play with who are not involved in lunchtime leagues.
Run around Ireland challenge
Each class took part in the run around Ireland challenge this year. Each class ran around the school yard or around our new Active Schools Walkway every day. Junior classes counted 1 lap as 1 km and senior classes counted 2 laps as 1 km. Everyone tracked their progress beside a big map on our Active Schools wall and also on checklists which were hung outside each classroom. As well as enjoying a run each day, the children learned about various new places in Ireland when they visited them.

Christmas Flash Mob
We organised Christmas 'Flash Mobs' during the last 2 weeks of December. This involved playing music when the whole school was present and performing a dance together as a whole school. Our Active Schools Flag committee and some older students guided and demonstrated the dances for the younger students.
Active Break Challenge
As a whole school, we took on the Active Break Challenge for the month of November. The students engaged in a variety of movement breaks throughout the day which included dancing, running and various movement and exercise challenges. The children really enjoyed taking part in the challenge, especially on rainy days when they couldn't go outside.
